The honest answer is room by room, and in most houses it takes about five minutes to work out. A sheer diffuses daylight into a soft, even glow and blurs the view in from outside, so you keep the light and the outlook while the street sees texture instead of your living room.

The catch is night. After dark, with lamps on inside, the privacy flips and the street gets the better view. That is not a defect in the fabric, it is physics, and it is why sheers alone rarely suit bedrooms.

Where sheers earn their keep: living rooms, dining spaces, home offices on video calls, and any room where the view is part of the appeal. What a blockout actually does

A blockout has a dense woven or coated backing that stops light almost entirely. That buys you three things: real darkness for sleeping past sunrise, a layer of insulation working in both seasons, and a quieter room, because fabric mass absorbs sound.

One honest note before you buy the word "blackout" from anyone: blockout is the fabric, darkness is the fit. A quality blockout fabric hung inside the window recess still leaks light around its own edges. Fit the curtain wider and higher than the frame and the darkness follows. The happiest blockout review we found while researching this industry reads "on a bright sunny day outside, the room was so dark that lights needed to be turned on to see". That is the standard worth aiming for, and the fabric is only half of it.
