Everything you need to know about ordering, measuring, and installing your custom window treatments.
How do I measure my windows accurately?
Measure the width and drop in three places and work from the smallest width and the longest drop so your covering fits cleanly. Decide first whether you want an inside mount that sits within the window recess or an outside mount that covers the frame, since this changes how you measure. Our measuring guide walks you through it step by step.
I am not confident measuring. Can you help?
Absolutely. Order your free samples, follow the guide, and if anything is unclear send us your window photos and rough sizes and we will talk you through it before you commit. We would much rather spend ten minutes with you up front than have you guess.
Who is responsible for the final measurements?
Because every piece is cut to the sizes you provide, we make to those exact figures. We ask you to measure twice and follow our guide. If a size you supply turns out to be incorrect the item is not faulty, so it sits outside change of mind and outside what a remedy can cover. We will never leave you stuck though, and we offer a discounted remake to get it right.
How does ordering work?
Choose your fabric and colour, enter your measurements in the customiser, and we cut, sew and finish your order by hand in our Australian workshop. You can request a quote at any time, and our team is happy to check your selection before anything is cut.
Why should I order free samples first?
Screens never show colour the way real fabric does in your own light. We send up to 8 samples completely free so you can confirm the exact shade and texture at home before you order. Most colour and measuring worries disappear once the swatches are in your hands.
Can I change or cancel my order after placing it?
Yes, as long as we have not cut your fabric yet, so contact us straight away. Once fabric is cut to your measurements the order is in production and unique to you, so it can no longer be changed or cancelled.
How long will my order take?
Each order is made to measure in Australia, with a typical lead time of 10 to 14 business days. You will receive a tracking link the moment your order leaves our workshop.
What does delivery cost?
Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your delivery address and order size. Fabric samples always ship free. Remote areas may need a little extra transit time, and we will let you know if that applies to you.
Is it easy to install myself?
Yes. Every order arrives with the brackets, screws and clear instructions you need, and most blinds take around fifteen minutes per window. You will want a drill, a Phillips head screwdriver, a spirit level and a pencil.
Do you offer professional installation?
Yes. We partner with certified installers across Australia. You can add installation at checkout, or contact us after your order arrives and we will arrange a fitter in your area.
How do I care for my curtains and blinds?
Care depends on the fabric, and the exact method is listed on every product page. As a rule, sheers and linen looks are best vacuumed gently or dry cleaned, while coated blockout rollers wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh solvents and never machine wash coated fabrics.
What protection do I have if something goes wrong?
You are fully covered. If anything ever arrives with a genuine fault, is not what was described, or is not fit for its purpose, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund, and we honour that without argument and without fine print. Standing behind our work this way is not optional for us, it is the standard we hold ourselves to.
What is your returns policy on made to measure orders?
Because every curtain and blind is cut and sewn to your exact measurements and chosen fabric, it cannot be resold, so we are unable to accept returns for change of mind, for the wrong colour ordered, or for an incorrect size supplied. This is standard for bespoke window furnishings and it is part of how we keep our quality high and our prices fair. Your right to a fair remedy for any genuine fault always applies on top of this.
What if my order arrives faulty or not as described?
We will repair, replace or refund it at no cost to you, no questions and no fine print. Simply send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we will sort it out quickly.
What happens if I measured incorrectly?
Since we cut to the figures you supply, an incorrect measurement is not a fault in the product, so it is not something a remedy covers, the piece itself was made correctly to those sizes. We will not leave you stuck though. We offer a discounted remake so you only pay for the new fabric and make up, and our guide, free samples and team are all there to help you get it right the first time.
What warranty do you offer?
Every Mekan order is covered by the consumer guarantees of the Australian Consumer Law. If anything is faulty, not as described, or not fit for purpose, we will repair, replace or refund it. Selected fabrics also carry their own manufacturer warranties, and we will pass those details on with your order.
Are your fabrics safe and certified?
Our fabrics are fire tested to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1530.3, and selected ranges hold independent certifications such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and GREENGUARD Gold for low emissions. Everything we make is made right here in Australia.
What is the difference between sheer, light filtering and blockout?
Sheer and light filtering fabrics soften and diffuse daylight while keeping a sense of openness, giving you privacy by day but not at night. Blockout fabrics have a dense or coated backing that stops light almost entirely, which makes them ideal for bedrooms, media rooms and full privacy. Many homes layer a sheer with a blockout to enjoy both.
Should I order all my curtains or blinds at the same time?
Yes, wherever you can. Ordering matching fabrics together means they are cut from the same production run, so colour and texture line up exactly across every window. Fabrics ordered months apart can come from a different dye lot and vary very slightly.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
Yes. We work with builders, interior designers and developers on multi window and multi home projects. Visit our trade page or contact us with your project details and we will put together pricing and lead times to suit.
What should I do if my order arrives damaged?
Please inspect everything on arrival. If a parcel looks damaged, photograph it before and after opening, then contact us within 7 days of delivery. We will remake or replace any item damaged in transit at no cost to you.
Are your blinds child safe?
Yes, child safety is built in. Every corded blind arrives with the cord safety fittings included and ready to install, made to the safety standards Australian families expect. For nurseries and young children we also offer chain free and motorised options that remove the cord altogether, the safest choice of all, so just ask and we will help you pick.
What can void my warranty?
Our cover applies to faults in our materials and workmanship. It does not cover normal wear and tear, gradual colour fading from sun exposure, damage from incorrect installation, the use of harsh or unapproved cleaning products, or general misuse. Following the care guide that comes with your order keeps your cover intact.
Will my fabric fade over time?
Our fabrics are chosen for good fade resistance and several ranges are independently tested for colourfastness. Even so, every textile changes slightly after years of strong direct sun, so gradual fading is normal and is not considered a fault. Coated blockout and screen fabrics tend to hold their colour the longest.
